Warm Home Discount
The £150 Warm Home Discount is run through Great Britain energy suppliers and isn't available in Northern Ireland, which has its own energy market. NI households on low incomes need different schemes instead.
- Worth
- £150 off electricity bills in Great Britain — not in NI
- Run by
- Great Britain energy suppliers — not operated in Northern Ireland
- Status
- Not available in Northern Ireland
Who qualifies
- Not available to Northern Ireland customers
What it covers
NI households on a low income should instead check Affordable Warmth, NISEP, Winter Fuel Payment, Cold Weather Payment and, above all, a full benefits check through Make the Call.
How it works
In Great Britain, eligible households get a one-off £150 discount on their electricity bill, usually automatically. The scheme reopens for winter 2026/27 in October 2026.
Northern Ireland's electricity and gas markets are regulated separately by the Utility Regulator, and GB supplier schemes like this one don't extend here. GOV.UK itself says the scheme is not available in Northern Ireland and points to the Affordable Warmth Scheme instead.
There's no NI scheme that takes money off your bill in the same way. The closest help comes through the schemes below.
What NI households can do instead
- Get a free benefits check through Make the Call on 0800 232 1271 — qualifying benefits unlock Cold Weather Payments and NISEP's priority funding.
- If you're of State Pension age, look out for your Winter Fuel Payment letter in October or November.
- If you own your home and are on a low income, apply to Affordable Warmth for free insulation and heating improvements.
- If you're struggling with bills, talk to your supplier about an affordable payment plan, or contact the Consumer Council on 0800 121 6022 for help.
Watch out for
- Websites listing the Warm Home Discount without saying it's GB-only.
- Messages offering to "apply on your behalf" for a £150 discount at an NI address — it doesn't exist here.
Questions people ask
Is there anything like the Warm Home Discount in NI?
Not as a bill discount. Help in NI comes through the Winter Fuel Payment, Cold Weather Payments, NISEP and Affordable Warmth — and a benefits check is the best place to start.
I've moved from England — will my discount carry over?
No. It's tied to an account with a participating GB supplier, so it doesn't follow you to a Northern Ireland address.
